Leamington police are warning the public about buying and selling items on the website kijiji.ca after two people were defrauded out of substantial amounts of money.
The website allows people to buy and sell items around the world free of charge.
In both Leamington cases items were placed for sale on kijiji.ca and in both cases contact was made with the seller from buyers who were from overseas.
Both parties agreed upon an amount and the seller was sent a cheque well in excess of the agreed-upon amount.
The seller is then asked to send the remaining amount, minus the price of the item, to a third party by Western Union to cover the cost of shipping.
The original cheque is then found to be counterfeit or fraudulent and the victim is out of the amount of money sent to the third party.
Police say the buyers in both instances were very aggressive and insist on everything being done as quickly as possible.
In one of the Leamington cases even after the victim had been defrauded and reported the incident to police the fraud artist contacted the victim demanding more money.
Police have great difficulty tracking the culprits and investigating the incident.
People selling items online are advised to avoid accepting cheques or money orders greater than the amount agreed upon.
Police also recommend that people never agree to make any purchase where you agree to reimburse someone for a balance.

You are welcome.
I still buy stuff there but the item must be in town. In that case, I can look at the item and trade it in person.
